Metro police officer Lebogang Mngomezulu helped deliver a healthy baby girl after a 28-year-old pregnant woman went into labour on a pavement on Eloff Street in Johannesburg central on the morning of 19 June.
Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, “JMPD officer Lebogang Mngomezulu was alerted to a female who was lying down on the pavement of Eloff Street at the intersection with Village Road in Selby, Johannesburg.
“Mngomezulu arrived on the scene and realised the woman was in labour on the pavement. The officer delivered a healthy baby girl on the pavement and wrapped the baby in her Metro police jacket.”
Mngomezulu then went to fetch a paramedic of the Johannesburg Central Fire Station who cut the umbilical cord.
The mother and her newborn child were taken by ambulance to Hillbrow Clinic and are doing well.
