Men held for attempting to steal car at Melrose Arch dealership

MELROSE ARCH – One suspect was shot in the back while another one was injured after he had stepped on a broken bottle.

On 12 June, the Johannesburg Flying Squad arrested five suspects while attempting to steal a car at a local dealership and an illegal firearm was also recovered.

The police were apparently following on a tip-off by other law enforcement agencies, said the unit’s spokesperson, senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo.

“Members followed up information of a suspicious white Range Rover with five suspects inside that were trying to steal a charcoal Golf R at Melrose Arch VW dealership in Birnam,” Sambo said.

“It is alleged that the suspects were spotted by JMPD [the Metro police] and CAP Security members. On arrival, Flying Squad members found the suspects shooting at other members. A chase ensued between them until they were arrested on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston next to a petrol station.”

According to Sambo, during the shoot-out between the suspects and the security officers, one of the suspects was shot in the back.

This happened before the Johannesburg Flying Squad officers were called in and Sambo said he was apparently shot by the security officers.

He added that another was injured after he had stepped on broken bottles.

“The two were taken to a nearby hospital and were placed under police guard.

“The 9mm Taurus firearm that was used was recovered and the vehicle they were travelling in was confiscated. It was later discovered that it had false number plates.”

All of the five suspects, aged between 25 and 34, were detained at Randburg Police Station and will be appearing soon in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

Sambo said they face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a suspected robbed vehicle and attempted murder.

An investigation still continues, he concluded.
