Motorists who use 1st Street and Melville Road in Hyde Park will be relieved to know that City Power and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) officials have installed new traffic lights. Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said this was quite a relief and would make the residents happy as he has been asking for the traffic lights for a while now.
Further down, however, the traffic lights at the corner of 1st and 6th streets by Hyde Park Corner have been out for about two months.
“We reported them consistently to the JRA and eventually, about three weeks ago, I was told it was a City Power problem. I was given a lot of reference numbers, which I forwarded to City Power, still with no resolution to the issue,” Williams said.
He added that there seems to be a communication and coordination problem within the entities and expressed concern that it is dangerous for such a busy intersection to be out for so long.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said there was a cable fault affecting those traffic lights and City Power would send technicians to fix them. Mangena said, “We encourage the community to report any dysfunctional traffic and public lights to City Power so that we can attend to them.”
