Jeppe police welcome sentencing of Da Silva and Kunene

BETRAMS – The two were found guilty of murder, carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Jeppe police welcome the sentencing of the two convicted killers, Jimmy Sydney Da Silva and Osman Kunene, to life in prison by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

The two will also serve 15 years for murder and carjacking, said Jeppe police spokesperson Captain Richard Munyayi.

This is for the incident that took place on 30 October 2015, where their victim, Thulani Ncube, was shot and killed in Betrams.

According to Munyayi, Ncube had just parked his white BMW car in front of a house on Kimberley Road when he was approached by the two convicted killers, who pointed a firearm at him and searched him.

The accused searched Ncube and took car keys, a wallet and a cell phone, Munyayi said.

“They took him to the car to show them how to start it and while walking towards the car, they shot him and still dragged him to the car to show them how to start it,” he said.

“After he showed them, they drove off and left him lying on the ground bleeding from the gunshots. Mr Ncube succumbed to the gun wounds on the scene.”

A case of murder and carjacking was opened at the Jeppe Police Station and the car was later found abandoned in Soweto after it was involved in an accident.

Following intensive investigations, Munyayi said Da Silva was arrested in Troyeville on 12 November in the same year and Kunene was then arrested at Mangolongolo squatter camp in Denver the following day.

Da Silva was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm during the arrest, Munyayi explained.

“The two made several appearances at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and were found guilty of murder, carjacking, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“They were both sentenced to life and 15 years in prison. Kunene was also handed a further 15-year sentence for an armed robbery case which he was wanted [for] by Johannesburg Central SAPS. Both 15 years sentences will run concurrently,” he said.

Warrant Officer Sydney Moloi, who headed the investigation, was praised by his senior managers, including the station commander Brigadier Wiseman Mthembu.

“I’m pleased with the outcome of the case and the way the investigating officer worked tirelessly to make sure that the accused were found guilty,” he said.

He said the sentence will serve as a deterrent to other criminals.
