A suspect arrested for stolen motor vehicle in Johannesburg

NEWTOWN – The suspect is believed to have parked the car at the mall earlier and came back in the afternoon to fetch it.

A man believed to be a car thief in Johannesburg was arrested on 11 June at Newtown Junction Mall on the corner of Gwigwi Mrwebi and Henry Nxumalo streets.

The 47-year-old suspect was arrested by the mall’s security guards who then alerted the police, who cuffed him and detained him at the police station.

“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they were called by security guards working at the mall,” said Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson the Johannesburg Central Police.

“They [security guards] were suspicious after seeing the car parked there since early in the morning. Police rushed to the mall, compared a vehicle and came out positive that it was reported stolen in Benoni in March. Police were on the lookout, waiting to see who was going to come and drive it.”

They saw a male jump inside and while trying to drive out of the parking, the police stopped him, said Mbele.

An investigation is underway and the suspect is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Details: Captain Xoli Mbele 082 777 6263.
