Verdi’s La Traviata returns to The Mandela auditorium

JOHANNESBURG – Verdi will be a fully staged opera sung in Italian with English translations.

The well-known opera by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi La Traviata will soon be presented at the Joburg Theatre by Sempre Opera.

The opera, which first premiered in Venice at La Fenice opera house on 6 March 1853, will open at The Mandela auditorium on 22 June with additional performances on 23, 26, 28 and 30 June.

This is the poignant tragic opera about the love story between one of opera’s most celebrated heroines Violetta Valéry and her one true love, Alfredo Germont which ends tragically when Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, forces Valéry to end the relationship so he can protect his family’s reputation.

Verdi’s La Traviata is based on the 1848 novel The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas which tells the tale of real-life courtesan, Marie Duplessis who died at the tender age of 23.

Chairperson of Sempre Opera, Linette van der Merwe said, “Sempre Opera is very excited about this second season in collaboration with Joburg Theatre.

“The fact that they acknowledge their opera-loving audiences creates an excellent opportunity to realise our mission and vision.”

Sempre Opera is a professional, non-profit opera company devoted to creating full-length opera productions and concerts of exceptional artistic standard.

Van der Merwe said she believes that the company will be fulfilling their objectives, namely, to create an opportunity for established artists to perform in a professional theatre, and students of opera to build a repertoire and an opportunity to sing alongside experienced artists on stage.

Makhaola Ndebele, Joburg City Theatres’ artistic director said they take pride in the diversity of live performance on its stages and look forward to partner with Sempre Opera once again.

The highly accomplished cast will be led by soprano Leah Gunter (Violetta Valéry) and tenor Yudi Cohen (Alfredo Germont).

This will be a fully staged opera sung in Italian with English translations projected. The opera will be directed and conducted by Pierre du Toit and Schalk van der Merwe.

Gunter said her debut performance with Sempre Opera and the Joburg Theatre’s stage, will be a highlight in her singing career, as well as working with Du Toit who has created a unique depth to Violetta’s tragic character.
