Strange smell along Paterson and Charltondale parks keeps locals guessing

ORCHARDS – Joburg Water has taken samples of the water and have sent it to the laboratory to check the source.

There is a strange smell coming from the water stream between the Paterson and Charltondale parks in Orchards, but no one knows what it is exactly.

It is believed the pungent smell is coming from the water, and according to local councillor David Fisher, it smells like sewerage.

Fisher said he was made aware of this unknown smell by residents and has instituted an investigation to establish what it is.

He said, however, they are still clueless as to what the smell is and where it’s coming from.

“So we then notified the City of Johannesburg’s entity Joburg Water and they have followed the stream all the way up as far as they can go and can’t find the source,” said Fisher.

Officials from the Joburg Water have taken samples to the laboratory to be tested.

“At the moment, the smell has gone and we will wait until the water has been tested and have the results from the laboratory,” Fisher said.

The spokesperson for the Joburg Water, Eleanor Mavimbela, has confirmed that officials from the entity had in fact taken samples to the laboratory.

“I can confirm that officials responded to the call from the local councillor and they did go up and down the stream but they could not find anything.

“They will get the preliminary results next week [this week from the laboratory].”

The councillor has urged residents to speedily notify him if the smell comes back so that he can liaise with the Joburg Water’s officials urgently.
