Help Parktown oarsmen fund their trip to Junior Men’s World Championships

PARKTOWN – The oarsmen aim to achieve a sub 00:06:20 time and a podium finish at the event in Japan.

Parktown Boys’ Callan Barrell and Cameron Taberer compete as part of the South African Schools Rowing side at the upcoming Junior Men’s World Championships in Japan.

Callan and Cameron, who began rowing in Grade 7 and 8 respectively, say they enjoy the mental challenge of the sport.

“It’s a really difficult sport. I enjoy the mental endurance I have built by challenging myself 24/7,” said Callan.

Cameron said, “It has helped me to break mental barriers. When you think you can’t do it, you discover you can do far more. You always have more to give. Rowing has also helped me to trust others and work together as a team.”

The confident rowers will compete in the coxed four division at the competition, which will take place in August, while their rowing coach Chris Payner will also compete as a coach for the Junior Men’s Pair.

Callan and Cameron have shown much tenacity and perseverance in their training. They travel to the Roodeplaat Dam regularly to row for two hours between studying for their matric exams.

“We rowed in the same boat at SA Champs and were selected together for both competitions. We have got all this way together,” said Callan.

They aim for a podium finish and sub 00:06:20 in the 2km event on the world stage.

“We are not just going there to compete, but want to have something to show for ourselves after the competition,” said Cameron.

The oarsmen believe that it is their ability to push themselves and adapt to row with different teams which helped them to qualify for the world champs.

While Cameron has received funding for the trip, Callan appeals to the community to assist him with funding, which will cost R160 000.
