Craigpark Residents Association holds yearly meeting

CRAIGHALL PARK – Tight security marked the Craighall Park residents meeting for the year.

The Craighall Park residents came in their numbers to attend their annual general meeting. Hosted by the Craigpark Residents Association (CRA), the meeting was held at Craighall Primary School on 29 May. As the residents were heading to the venue, security vehicles and personnel, including guard dogs, from CAP Security, could be seen and were acknowledged by CRA chairman, Harry Rosen.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams gave the residents an overview of the projects that have been done in the area, including resurfacing on Jan Smuts and Lancaster avenues, aerial bundle cabling, speed humps, as well as reconstruction.

Williams also gave a rundown of the Conrad Bridge widening, which will start during the second week of June as phase one of the project has had the budget awarded, as well as a sewer upgrade on Grafton Avenue.

“We continue to encourage people to log problems to the relevant departments, and let’s all work together and support each other,” Williams said.

The attendees also got to hear about the shot hole borer from Julian Ortlepp, who reminded everyone that there is no solution to the deadly beetle and we could probably lose about a million trees.

“In my opinion, the only way is to cut down infected trees and start planting new ones. We found that it is easier to be ahead of the beetle than chase it, so preventative treatment such as spraying or injecting organic pesticides on unaffected trees will help,” Ortlepp said.

Regarding the security presentation, CAP CEO Mark van Jaarsveld said, “Residents’ involvement is key in the war against crime and the more residents call us, the less the crime. Each vehicle has to report on 150 proactives per shift every day.”

He added that CAP works with the police and has a legal team monitoring any legal cases arising out of crime in the suburbs.

Rosen spoke about the objections that the association made to property developments that would negatively impact the original make-up of the area as per the nodal review. The chairman also acknowledged the ward councillor, Martin Williams, for always keeping the residents well informed of outages, as well as seeing to issues being fixed promptly.
