Kingsmead Book Fair encourages good reading habits

ROSEBANK – Young and old were delighted to indulge their literary appetites at the Kingsmead Book Fair on 25 May.

The annual Kingsmead Book Fair, held on 25 May, was a resounding success, offering a rich and diverse programme of more than 140 authors participating in over 50 sessions throughout the day.

Head of Kingsmead College Lisa Kaplan said, “As a school, we are passionate about reading and it is so important that our students are exposed to books, authors – in particular African authors – and good reading habits. The Kingsmead Book Fair provides this platform.”

Authors who participated in the programme on the day included Mohale Mashigo, Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu, Rebecca Davis, Rekgotsofetse Chikane, Kiara Nirghin and Eugenie Kadid Sayegh, among others.

The theme for the fair was ‘Read and rise’ – a fitting theme for an event which coincided with Africa Day.

One of the aims of the Kingsmead Book Fair’s outreach programme is to offer entrance and session tickets to various organisations and reading groups that might otherwise not have the means to attend. Beneficiaries from this year included St Vincent School for the Deaf, Bukho Bami Youth Centre, the Sizanani Mentorship Programme, Rays of Hope and the Alexandra Education Committee.

In addition to books, guests were able to purchase food and drinks, and buy all the visiting author’s books and have them signed at an Exclusive Books pop-up store.
