MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager has announced that Pikitup has resumed waste collection services in Yeoville, Bellevue and Bellevue East.
This follows after residents of these areas prevented Pikitup employees from discharging its responsibilities of collecting waste, rendering street cleaning services and clearing illegal dumping spots.
“Pikitup will focus its efforts on refuse collection, street cleaning and the clearing of illegally dumping sites that have mushroomed as a result of non-collection of waste in the affected areas,” said De Jager.
“During the violent protest, a Pikitup driver was forced by residents to empty a truck full of waste in the middle of Yeo Street, next to the police station. The driver attempted to resist but was threatened with violence. Pikitup management then took a decision to temporarily halt services until peace returned to the area.”
The MMC said Pikitup is implementing a plan to tackle the waste backlogs which include instituting double shifts, one in the morning and another in the afternoon and using extra resources from Monday to Friday to tackle the waste backlog.
