ToyZone cycle race takes place this Sunday

MELROSE ARCH – Children from three months to 13 years can expect lots of cycling fun, games and goodies on Sunday at the ToyZone Kids' Cycle Race.

It’s time to take your children’s bicycles out of the garage, check the tyres and brakes and make sure their helmets still fit properly because the annual ToyZone Kids’ Cycle Race at Melrose Arch is around the corner. The race is taking place on 26 May on the piazza and families are guaranteed a fun day out while raising money for charity.

All proceeds will be donated to Smile Foundation, a South African NGO that helps children living with treatable facial anomalies, craniofacial abnormalities, as well as ear, nose and hand conditions, and burn wounds. Based in 11 academic hospitals in South Africa, the Smile Foundation invests in the teams they work with, through a skills development programme, and they assist the hospitals by purchasing equipment for use by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Their mission is to positively transform children’s lives.

“We are honoured to collaborate with ToyZone and Melrose Arch once again in the ToyZone Kids’ Cycle Race, an event that just gets bigger and better every year. This day is all about bringing smiles to kids’ faces and is a real treat for the entire family,” said Hedley Lewis, CEO at Smile Foundation.

No one is too young to enter and expert cycling skills aren’t required – all the future Tour de France cyclists need is a set of wheels, lots of enthusiasm and a proud parent who’ll reward them with hugs and kisses at the end. Entries are open to children aged between three months and 13 years, in four age categories.

Please remember that helmets are compulsory – no helmet, no ride.

“The ToyZone Kids’ Cycle Race is one of our favourite events,” said Mike Vermaak, managing director of Melrose Arch. “It’s wonderful to see so many children having a good time and there’s always a great atmosphere on the precinct. The children’s cycle race offers families an opportunity to relax and have fun in a safe environment while contributing to a worthy cause.”

Registration opens at 8am, with the first race taking place at 9am. Parents can register their children an hour before their respective age categories.

Every entrant will receive a goodie bag and a medal upon completion of the race, and there will be spot prizes up for grabs throughout the morning. There will also be lucky draws, in which two diamond-back bicycles can be won. Once children have finished cycling, there will be plenty of fun kids’ activities on the piazza.

Details: To enter, go to www.smilefoundation.co.za. Participants can also enter on the day. Entries cost R100 each.
