In their quest to help raise funds for the church, Aldersgate Methodist Church youth in Lombardy East held their first photo exhibition and sold their work to the highest bidders.
According to the organiser and photography teacher, Vuyani Sotsaka, each youngster exhibited three of their works which were images taken from trips they made to Emmarentia Dam. Sotsaka teaches photography at the church as part of their skills development program.
The team took about six trips to the dam with Sotsaka teaching them the basics of photography and exposing them to different methods to capture good quality photographs.
Sotsaka said the displayed photographs portraying what they had learned in that time. He continued that the youth were very excited by this exhibition and they would like to host more exhibitions to showcase their work and raise funds for the church.
“The funds that were raised [this time] went to Aldersgate Methodist Church Care Fund, which is run by the church,” said Sotsaka.
“The funds help those who are less fortunate and through this scheme, we can then buy them food and or clothes. Everyone who attended the exhibition had a choice of buying any pictures that they liked.”
He said nine out of the 12 photos on display were sold to the congregation. “I’m also proud of the work that my students produced and it gave me great pleasure to pass down my knowledge and skills of photography to talented youngsters.”
Sotsaka is planning more trips for the youth to further develop their photographic skills which he said will enable them to capture their memories and teach them how to take amazing photos in different locations.
He concluded that exposing them to these types of creative skills gives them the courage and good mindset that they can do anything if they put their mind, body, and soul into it.
The next outing is expected to be on Youth Day, 16 June.
