Suspect arrested after allegedly brutally assaulting girlfriend over TV channels

JOBURG – Man arrested after allegedly choking and assaulting his girlfriend with his fists over a TV argument.

Johannesburg Central Police spokesperson Xoli Mbele has confirmed a Johannesburg man had been arrested after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend over an argument of who should watch which TV channel in their York House flat in central Joburg.

Mbele said the boyfriend arrived home on 20 May at about 4pm, apparently under the influence of alcohol and his girlfriend and their two-year-old daughter were watching a cartoon show. He wanted to change the channel but the girlfriend apparently told him he could only do so after the child’s show was finished.

“The argument started and the boyfriend said the DStv they were watching he paid for. He started choking the girlfriend, he then assaulted her with his fists while the little girl was watching this,” said Mbele.

The girlfriend allegedly screamed for help and the neighbours came to her rescue. She later called the police when the boyfriend allegedly started breaking the TV and some of their appliances.

“He will be appearing at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court tomorrow. He has been charged with domestic violence and malicious damage to property.”
