Youth unemployment rate remains high

JOBURG – Unemployment rate among SA youth is higher irrespective of educational level.

On Tuesday, 14 May, Stats SA announced that South Africa’s unemployment rate increased to 27.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2019. The rate has increased by half a percentage point compared to 2018’s fourth quarter of 27.1 per cent.

Stats SA reported that 38.3 million people are of working age (15–64-year-olds) in South Africa and 16.3 million are employed while 6.2 million are unemployed while 15.8 million are thought to not be economically active.

The youth unemployment rate remains high with the rate for 25–34-year-olds sitting at 34.2 per cent and 55.2 per cent for 15–24-year-olds. The unemployment rate among the youth is higher irrespective of educational level.
