What to do this weekend

JOBURG – Top five things to do in Joburg this weekend.

When is the next public holiday, again? This week was such a blare and I’m sure everyone can’t wait for the weekend to begin. Let’s sit back and enjoy the weekend before we go back to Monday’s blues and seriousness.

Check out our top five things to do this weekend:

17 May: Migrant Cuisines Storytelling Dinner

On 17 May, the Migrant Cuisines Storytelling Dinner presents a magical evening of storytelling combined with delectable food and drinks. Presented by JoburgPlaces at its Thunder Walker venue in Gandhi Square, this promises to be a memorable evening in the city, discovering the history and cuisines of some of Johannesburg’s most prominent migrant communities.  To book your space, email gerald@joburgplaces.com for only R450.

18 May: #JoziWalks2019

The #JoziWalks2019 weekend is happening on 18 and 19  May and this year 11 walks have been chosen to explore a variety of neighbourhoods across the city. This year’s #JoziWalks tours include a comedy walk through Braamfontein, a booklovers tour of the Joburg City Centre, and Women of Fire, a walk through Constitution Hill and Hillbrow led by artist Mbali Mdluli that is focused on women’s history and public art.

18 May: Fun with Form: Family Talkabout with Kamal Naran

Wits Art Museum will be hosting Fun with Form: Family Talkabout with Kamal Naran on 18 May. Artworks, that take the book form as their starting point, come in many shapes, sizes and forms. Explore round books, triangular books, books that move and pop-up books with your family as inspiration for a bonding, hands-on, family art-making project. The event is designed for children between five and 12 years and their parents/caregivers. Email info.wam@wits.ac.za to book.

19 May: Rooftop Salsa Presents Salsa at Six

Newbie or advanced, end the weekend with an afternoon of social dancing of salsa, bachata, and kizomba. You can dance or watch while sipping Six’s famous two-for-one cocktails. No cover charge, have fun!

19 May: Savanna Newcomer Showcase

The Savanna Newcomer Showcase is set to come alight as 24 budding, talented comics from across the country take on the stage. Taking place at the Soweto Theatre on 19 May, the showcase gives the young comics five minutes to display the best routines they’ve got, all in the hopes of being crowned at this year’s Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards (CCAs). Book your seats for R250. Your ticket, which includes a Savanna Premium Cider and a meal, is available on www.webtickets.co.za
