Parkview Junior parents participate in cook-off competition celebrating the school’s diversity

PARKVIEW – School fundraiser seeks to celebrate diversity and raise funds for the refurbishment of school tennis courts.

Parkview Junior School hosted a successful community-building cook-off and movie night recently to celebrate their school’s diversity.

Children were invited to enjoy a movie while parents participated in a competitive cook-off.

Chair of the Parent Teacher Association Debbie Green said, “We are raising funds to renovate the school’s tennis and multipurpose court. The event is also a great opportunity for parents to mingle while kids watch a movie or play with their friends.”

Green said that 8 kilograms of popcorn was popped for the children, with a large deal of it falling on the floor. Green commented that the children were happy to clean up the hall after enjoying their movie.

The food on offer at the cook-off took on a traditional or cultural theme, with dishes varying from pap and chakalaka to traditional English fare and curries.

Parents paid to taste the various dishes on offer and voted for their favourite.

The winners were Asma Nosarka with shrimp noodle in peanut sauce, Zeenat Bhamjee with chicken biryani and Ayanda Mkhwanazi with steamed bread and tripe.

More than 300 children attended, 240 tickets were sold and R18 000 was raised for the refurbishment of tennis and multipurpose courts.
