Norwood Primary School gives children the opportunity to ‘exercise their charitable muscles’

NORWOOD – The school's department head believes that all children are born with an innate sense of charity and compassion.

Local school children recently donated clothes and other necessities to the Princess Alice Adoption Home in Randburg.

For 30 years, Norwood Primary School (NPS) has done charity work throughout the year to help their community. The school’s head of department in the foundation phase, Salosh Frank, said that over the years, the school has been involved with Cotlands, Bread Tags for Wheel Chairs, Adopt an Animal, Home of Hop and Princess Alice Adoption Home. Foundation and senior phase learners are randomly selected to help distribute the collected items, a tradition that has been in place for quite some time, according to Frank.

She added that all children are born with an innate sense of charity and compassion. “Children naturally look for ways to make a contribution and help others, we need to give them opportunities to exercise their charitable muscles so they become really good at giving too.

“The benefits of actively fostering children’s charitable impulses are enormous. Besides helping counter the overdeveloped ‘gimme’ impulse, it gives kids a powerful boost in self-esteem to realise they can make a difference in someone’s life.”

Frank also said that parents and learners are actively involved with the donations. “We are most grateful to our NPS parents…this years donation was very well received by the Princess Alice Adoption Home, both the staff and the little ones were very excited when we arrived to deliver the clothes and sweet treats.”

She concluded that the school has a fundraising committee that deals with all the donations and urged anyone in the community who would like to assist, to contact the school. “We will gladly drop off all items given at our next stop and items collected are mostly children’s clothes, shoes, toys, and any educational resources.”
