Newborn found abandoned in a plastic bag in Hillbrow

HILLBROW – Two Metro police officers approached what they heard was a baby crying on the pavement close to the Rea Vaya bus station on Twist Street.

As South Africans woke up in the early hours of the morning to head out and vote on 8 May, Metro police officers found an abandoned newborn baby in a plastic bag on the corner of Twist Wolmarans streets in Hillbrow near the Rea Vaya station.

MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun said in a statement that two concerned members of the public approached  two Metro police officers about the baby. The officers reported that they approached what they heard was a baby crying on the pavement close to the Rea Vaya station. They immediately called for assistance from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS). The EMS took the newborn to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital for an examination to ensure the baby’s good health and to receive further care going forward.

Sun said, “This is the second case since June 2018 where we see newborns being abandoned at bus stops. We are horrified to see how anyone can simply ‘throw away’ a baby in a plastic bag.”

The MMC said they would ensure a criminal case was opened and both parents were found.

Sun thanked the officers for their quick response and saving the newborn’s life.
