Orange Grove Primary School commemorate inaugural World Book Day

ORANGE GROVE – The school's library is a magical space, run by committed volunteers.

Winnie the Witch, Bob the Builder, Queen Sheba and Spot the Dog paid a visit to Orange Grove Primary School on 23 April to celebrate World Book Day.

This was the first time that the school had participated in this special event which was originally established in 1995 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to promote reading.

Penguin Random House Publishers sponsored the activities and brought along inspiring authors, including Refiloe Moahloli and Elaine Mac Donald to read to the foundation phase learners.

The books, How many ways can you say hello, Tullula and I can see an elephant, kept the learners enthralled, while illustrator Vanessa Mearns, entertained the little ones by teaching them the art of drawing.

Andy Marks, an organiser of the event, thanked Penguin Random House for donating hundreds of books to the library as well as boxes of crayons and drawing templates.

Bloch said over 1 500 gift food packets were served to every learner in the school and delicious cookies to the staff.

“Orange Grove Primary School library is a magical space, run by committed volunteers,” said Marks.

“It is an experience such as this that helps to inspire young minds. This, in turn, translates into more and more pupils making use of the library.”

She added that the morning was such a success and they now plan to make it an annual event in the school calendar.

Marks said that, hopefully, children and adults alike, regionally, nationally and internationally will realise the value of reading and thus alleviate the terrible scourge of illiteracy.
