Kingsmead learner raises R15 000 for expedition

ROSEBANK – A Grade 10 learner decided to tackle the top issues in the country such as power and politics while at the same time raising funds for her upcoming expedition.

A Grade 10 learner at Kingsmead College, Gallia Fenster, will participate in the World Challenge to Morocco in August.

According to Fenster, the World Challenge is an international organisation which aims at developing the life skills the global youth need to live a ‘courageous, kind and adventurous life’. The organisation believes in the power of community engagement, and aspire to a world where local and global communities come together to take action for positive change which is a vision of the world defined by the guiding principles of the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Fenster added that the challenge is part of the president’s award, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award which is available to all 14 to 24-year-olds and equips young people through non-formal education outside the classroom. It consists of four sections for young people which include voluntary service, development of skills, physical recreation and an adventurous journey.

Fenster said the 18-day challenge will be divided into five days of hiking on the Tiziani mountain range and 13 days of bettering communities as they will go to underdeveloped communities and schools to help improve learning systems.

“On 12 April I hosted a Politics and Power Business Breakfast, at the ClucasGray offices in Dunkeld, to raise funds for this expedition. The breakfast concerned the national elections, the energy crisis of South Africa and the implications of this on the South African economy and businesses,” said Fenster.

Three highly rated guest speakers; senior energy, mining and commodities strategist and tactician Ted Blom with a former political prisoner on Robben Island, Jaki Seroke and senior fund manager at ClucasGray Asset Management, Brendon Hubbard spoke on these matters.
