Joburg Ballet to offer a glimpse into its workings as dancers prepare for Snow White – the Ballet

JOBURG – Joburg Ballet returns to The Teatro at Montecasino with Snow White – the Ballet.

After a triumphant debut season at The Teatro, Montecasino in December, Joburg Ballet returns to the popular venue with its sparkling production of Snow White – the Ballet from Thursday 30 May to Sunday 2 June, for five performances only.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of a girl whose beauty drives an evil queen to vengeance, Joburg Ballet’s artistic director Iain MacDonald has choreographed a lyrical ballet, with music by the great Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, which has all the hallmarks audiences expect from the company: superb dancing, captivating theatre and enchanting settings.

With Snow White – the Ballet, MacDonald turned to a famous fairy tale, as he did with Cinderella which was such a critical and box office hit at The Teatro in December.

Snow White is a perfect fairy tale to adapt into a classical ballet, a story with romance, comedy and drama in equal measure. It also offers wonderful opportunities to showcase the wealth of talent Joburg Ballet offers, in both classical and character roles,” said MacDonald.

McDonald said he was delighted to be using the richly melodic and evocative music of Shostakovich and to have discovered just how perfectly suited his work is for ballet.

“The sets are by Andrew Botha, a stage designer with an impressive gift for transporting audiences to magical new worlds,” he said.

The casting for Snow White – The Ballet will feature Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Shana Dewey alternating in the title role, and Leusson Muniz and Ruan Galdino alternating as the Prince.

On Saturday 18 May from 10am to 1pm at the Joburg Ballet studios at Joburg Theatre, the ballet company will offer a glimpse into its working life as the dancers prepare for Snow White – the Ballet. The public has the chance to watch a ballet class, meet the creative team and see the company rehearse extracts from the ballet. Tickets are R120 and include refreshments. Booking is via Edgar Moagi on 011 877 6898 or email at edgar@joburgballet.com.
