Johannesburg Flying Squad arrests 20 suspects during Easter weekend

JOHANNESBURG – Three more suspects were arrested after a shoot-out and a high-speed chase with the police.

In their quest to ensure safety and security, the Johannesburg Flying Squad arrested 20 suspects for various crimes in different areas during the long Easter weekend, 18 to 23 April.

According to flying squad spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, the arrests were made during routine patrols as well as crime incidents responses. He added that they arrested three suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and another two for armed robbery. They also arrested two suspects for theft, one for drunken driving, six for possession of hijacked vehicles, one for possession of stolen vehicle and five for possession of drugs. “They recovered five stolen vehicles, five hijacked cars and two unlicensed 9mm pistols,” he said.

The stolen and hijacked vehicles recovered included a Ford Fiesta, an Audi, a VW Polo, a Kia Rio, an Isuzu truck, a Toyota Quantum, a Toyota Hilux, a Renault Megane, a VW Jetta and a Mercedes Benz.

All 20 suspects are expected to appear soon in different magistrate’s courts facing different charges.

Meanwhile, three suspects were also arrested by the unit after a shoot-out with the police during a high speed chase towards a shopping centre on 19 April. According to Subramoney, the flying squad responded to a vehicle look-out, a Ford Fiesta, after the suspects allegedly failed to rob a store.

“The police saw the suspected vehicle in Van Buuren Road in Bedfordview, then gave chase and ordered suspects to stop. The suspects then started to shoot at the police and the police returned fire.”

He added that the suspects drove into the centre’s parking area where they were cornered by the police who then arrested them. The suspects are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
