Premier Makhura calls on Gauteng to give racism and xenophobia the red card

JOBURG -– David Makhura honours former sports stars and administrators at his Social Cohesion Games gala dinner.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura honoured various sports legends for their contributions in making the province ‘a true home of the legends’.

Those honoured, although originally from other provinces and even outside the borders of the country, plied their trade in Gauteng and made significant contributions to the economic and sporting life of the province which is regarded as not just the economic hub of the country but that of the African continent as well.

Makhura presented the awards at a gala dinner of the third edition of the Premier’s Social Cohesion Games held in the packed Long Room of the Wanderers Stadium on 12 April.

In his address, Makhura outlined the vision of the games. “I would like all of us present here tonight and those who did not make it here, to begin to work towards giving racism and xenophobia the red card. We’re 25 years into our democracy and we cannot afford to still allow this monster to continue to raise its ugly head in our society. We [must] banish it once and forever,” Makhura said.

“We want all of us, black and white, migrants and citizens, to live cohesively together as one.”

Among the recipients of the awards were former Ria Stars owner and now Safa deputy president Ria Ledwaba, the late Safa president Solomon ‘Stix’ Morewa, former Safa CEO Raymond Hack, former Mamelodi Sundowns owner Natasha Tsichlas and veteran sports journalist Sy Lerman.
