Metro police catch two suspected hijackers in Joburg CBD

JOBURG CENTRAL – The police received information on the whereabouts of the vehicle from a WhatsApp group.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said officers of their CCTV reaction unit arrested two suspected hijackers in the early hours of 16 April in the Johannesburg CBD.

Minnaar said the two men hijacked the car in Kensington and officers spotted the white Toyota Corolla in Hillbrow after receiving a tip-off from a WhatsApp group.

Police went in pursuit of the vehicle as they chased the suspects up Commissioner Street. “The suspects pointed their firearms at the officers and the officers shot one suspect. The injured suspect was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital under police guard.”

The second suspect was detained at Jeppe Police Station. Minnaar added that the officers were not injured nor was the victim during the hijacking incident.

The suspects will face charges of armed hijacking.
