A total of 11 Johannesburg Flying Squad unit constables were finally promoted to become sergeants on 20 March after more than a decade in the police force.
The event was organised by Lieutenant Colonel Christo Frederick Erasmus, a unit commander and it was held at their Johannesburg based offices.
Erasmus congratulated and encouraged the members. “You need to take up the responsibility the rank comes with and promote the respect between the police and the community,” said Erasmus.
“You need to have integrity, meaning, you are required to do good even when no one is watching.”
Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Flying Squad, congratulated the newly promoted members and reminded them that there are constables looking up to them as their seniors. “You must continue to serve this organisation with pride, respect, and honesty so that the organisation can be trusted.”
Subramoney described the occasion as an auspicious event adding that only joy could only be seen on the faces of members awarded with promotions.
The promotions come just a few weeks after a potential strike by some members demanding promotions within the police ranks was averted.
National police Minister Bheki Cele, addressing the media in Parktown on 14 March, conceded that there is a backlog in the grade progression of employees between level 5 and 7 and promised to address the matter extensively.
He said then that a total of 69 219 members within these grades are long overdue for progression considerations as published in the North Eastern Tribune article Solve our grievances to avert strike – Sapu warns [Week ending 29 March].
Cele promised that together with the national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Khehla Sitole, they will meet with police managers from all the 1 147 country’s police stations soon in Pretoria to address and unpack this matter at length.
