Men in Tutus cast talks about upcoming ballet

FAIRMONT– An all-men cast is about to blow ballet enthusiasts off their seats at Montecasino.


Mixing ballet and comedy is what Men In Tutus is all about and the cast revealed what to expect from the upcoming ballet at a sit-down media session at Genesis All-Suite Hotel, Fairmont.

The ballet will take place at Montecasino’s Teatro from 12 to 14 April. The Les Ballets Eloelle presentation, led by founder, artistic director, and lead dancer Victor Trevino and an all-male cast of New York features dancers from the United States, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, the Philippines, Australia, Colombia, the Isle of Wight and Japan, and also includes South African dancer Joel Morris.

Trevino is also the founder and artistic director of Les Ballets Grandiva and Men in Pink Tights which has created various works for the company including Romeo and Juliet, Le Petite Nutcracker Suite, Spartacus, Swan Lake Act II, Bolero, Near the Middle Somewhat Below, Love Wrongs, Peridot, Minkus Gala, Pocahontas Pas, Dracula and The Changing Room, and he has staged numerous classical duets and solos.

His extensive career as a ballerino included most of the great female leads such as Odette, Odile, Giselle, Kitri, Aurora, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Juliet, and Carmen.

One of the dancers, Jonathan Mendez said, “I am so excited to be here in South Africa and I can’t wait for our audience to see we have in store for them.”

Mendez began dancing at the age of nine in Cali, Colombia at the Colombian Institute for Classical Ballet and during his eight years at the school his studies included extensive work in ballet, modern, folklore and character dance.”

Mendez obtained dance degrees from ballet-centred, secondary and higher-level institutions where he was educated by ballet masters Gloria Castro, Helena Cala, Maria Helena Llorente, as well as teachers from the National Ballet of Cuba.

The ballet will feature Pas de Quatre; Pas de Deux, Le Corsaire; A parody of George Balanchine’s choreography, Go for Barocco; and Swan Lake.
