Theft out of motor vehicle crime on the rise

NORWOOD – When you leave your car, ensure that your valuables are safely stored in a safe place.

Norwood Police Station‘s latest crime reports indicate that theft-out-of-motor vehicle is on the rise in their policing precinct and they urge motorists to always be alert.

According to Johannesburg North-East Cluster communications officer, Captain Richard Munyayi, this crime has become problematic and the most targeted areas include areas such as Norwood, Birdhaven and Melrose.

Norwood police are appealing to the community to be more vigilant with their vehicles.

“Our preliminary investigations reveal that most stolen properties are being left on top of the seats where criminals can see them and they are tempted to break into these cars,” he said.

“We are appealing to the motorists to put the goods inside the boot or remove them entirely from their cars. It is not advisable to leave these items on the seats to avoid a smash-and-grab situation.”

Munyayi said laptops are among the items that are most reported as stolen, adding that motorists should always ensure it is not exposed.

“They’re also advised not to wash the vehicles or tamper with them if there has been a break-in.

“Victims should at least wait for the police officers to attend to the vehicles to take fingerprints after a case has been reported.”
