Massive hole in the road frustrates Illovo residents

ILLOVO – Joburg Water says the matter will soon receive attention.

Illovo resident Derek Sumption is angered by Joburg Water’s lack of action to fix a large hole in the road obstructing traffic on the corner of Boundary Road and 1st Avenue for more than a month now.

Sumption explained that Joburg Water promptly attended to a burst pipe at this intersection over a month ago, restoring water to the area. But they have not returned to fill in the large hole which covers half the road at present.

“With something this big, you’d expect that they’d work on it, but nothing has happened. It causes huge traffic disruptions in peak hours,” said Sumption.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water Isaac Dhludlhu said, “Joburg Water has referred the job to the Johannesburg Roads Agency to fix the storm water aspect and Joburg Water will then be able to do the backfilling.”

Dhludhlu explained that the delayed repair was caused by a miscommunication that has been resolved and the matter is now receiving attention.

“We urge all residents to report all leaks (water and sewer) so that we don’t have delays. We advise residents that the service standards have timelines and in some instances, some job cards may take longer. We appeal for their patience as Joburg Water is committed to provide a sustainable service to all,” said Dhludhlu.

Ward 91 councillor Jeffrey Pietersen said, “This matter has been ongoing for a few weeks. I spoke to the regional JRA manager who said he would prioritise this matter. There was a job card that was not handed to the JRA from Joburg Water.”

He added that the matter should be resolved by the end of the week.

Deputy director of communications at the City of Joburg Nthatisi Modingoane confirmed that the query was logged with JRA.

“A work order was created and issued by the relevant depot. Yesterday [1 April] the team was on-site to make the trench safe and repair work will be done before the end of the week. JRA would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
