WESTCLIFF – Hundreds of friends of the school gathered for a glamorous evening to raise funds for Salvazione Christian School.

Hundreds of parents, old boys, staff and friends of The Ridge School celebrated the school’s centenary by raising R1.6 million for Salvazione Christian School at a glamorous ball on 30 March.

The event brought together friends of the school to celebrate in style with a purpose.

Chair of the centenary committee Angie Chapman said, “The event which has been in the making for years now was about making a real difference in the lives of one organisation.”

The school selected Salvazione Christian School based in Brixton as the beneficiary because of the school’s growing need to build a new junior primary. The school has been supported by The Ridge, Auckland Park Preparatory School and St Katherine’s schools since its inception in 1991.

Speaking to Chapman as the event began on 30 March, she said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, which had already raised R420 000 for Salvazione Christian School.

“The Ridge School’s Centenary Celebration not only celebrated the important milestone of the school’s 100th birthday, but ensured that in doing so we uplifted the lives of those less fortunate too. We are completely overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit that was at work on Saturday night… What a fitting legacy to leave during this our Centenary Year,” said Chapman.

The event began with the unveiling Marco Cianfanelli’s sculpture representing the emergence and growth of the individual and the collective. The beautiful sculpture contains the names of all the boys currently enrolled at the school.”

An auction of famous South African artwork and artwork by boys at The Ridge School served to further depict the rich generosity of The Ridge community. The items were auctioned off by renowned auctioneers Gift Ngwenya and Susie Goodman.

Supporters of the cause danced the night away to the music of GoodLuck to conclude the central fundraising event.

The school will host a number of other centenary events in the remaining months of the year to further support the cause. These include a rugby and soccer derby and mothers event in June.
