Residents mark Human Rights Day significantly

NORWOOD – The day was well spent with various organisations and individuals supporting and enjoying themselves.

Sports and motivational talks were the order of the day in Norwood when residents commemorated the annual Human Rights Day in the suburbs.

The holiday is celebrated on 21 March in South Africa to remind citizens about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in the country.

Residents used sport, precisely soccer, to celebrate this significant occasion and various local organisations and individuals attended.

According to the organisers, the 7324 Women’s Business Forum, the event was well attended and people enjoyed themselves.

Sharon Mtshali, public relations and communications officer for the forum, said the celebration was a success.

“We had St Giles Church members attending, the Norwood police from their Social Crime Prevention Department as well as local politicians to celebrate this historic event with us,” said a jovial Mtshali.

“We had our local football clubs also participating in the main activities of the day and they were also educated about their rights as young citizens of the country – importantly how to utilise them. We also had Cat Association to teach the kids about the rights of animals and how to treat them as well.”

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett also attended to help out with the cooking and even helped to serve meals to the children.

Mtshali said Huggett also gave a short educational talk to the children about the history and the significance of Human Rights Day.

She said, “It was a successful day and the kids enjoyed themselves.”

On the football fields, Norwood Young Stars U13 beat Johannesburg United FC 3–1, Norwood Young Stars U15 won 5–0 against HP Stars FC and Majority FC U15 played to a goalless draw against Norwood Young Star.
