BET sets out to bring Lebo Mathosa to life in new biopic

JOBURG – The Lebo Mathosa Story is a drama series that follows Mathosa as a young, shy and ambitious girl who turned herself into a powerful force in the music industry.

Having being at the forefront of South Africa’s youth culture in the late 90s and early 2000s, Lebo Mathosa’s life was cut short following a fatal car crash in 2006. However, the icon will be brought back to life in a new BET Africa and Lebo Mathosa Foundation drama series.

The Lebo Mathosa Story is a drama series that follows Mathosa as a young, shy and ambitious girl who turned herself into a powerful force in the music industry at the peak of South Africa’s social transition.

BET Africa said the series is based on the iconic singer’s short, yet, amazing life and will take the audience on a journey of the 90s, from the beginning of the country’s kwaito revolution, Mathosa’s fame as one of Boom Shaka’s lead members, and an incredible solo career that saw her live her life unapologetically

In light of bringing the icon’s story to life, BET Africa is holding open auditions for the starring role of Mathosa. The network said it was on the search for two talented performers to play Mathosa at different ages of her life.

The auditions take place Sunday, 31 March, at Sky Rink Studios and interested individuals must be between the ages of 10 and 14 as well as 20 to 30 years to audition for the younger and older Mathosa.

The series is expected to air in September this year.
