Transformer stolen at Houghton substation affecting power in the area

HOUGHTON – City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said power is expected to be back around midnight.

A transformer at a City Power substation in Houghton was stolen this morning (25 March) affecting power in many surrounding areas.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, “City Power has had its transformer stolen at a substation in Houghton. It is not clear how this happened or who was involved, but a case has been opened.”

The substation is located in 9th Avenue, Houghton Estate, outside the Old Eds Virgin Active.

“Several areas around Houghton are currently without electricity due to the theft. City Power technicians are currently working to ensure electricity is restored. We expect power to be back around midnight,” said Mangena.

This comes after a recent bout of load-shedding by Eskom who confirmed today that no load-shedding will take place this week.

Although, not as a result of load-shedding, for Houghton residents more hours of darkness, are to follow.
