Increased car safety in Parkhurst

PARKHURST – The 4th Avenue car guards were made official during the first phase of their launch which was supported and attended by various stakeholders.

Some relief will be felt by residents, especially motorists in Parkhurst as they learn that phase one of the car guards was launched. The first phase included the 4th Avenue Parkhurst car guards being issued with ID cards as well as their QR cards at the Espresso Cafe and Bistro in Parkhurst.

The initiative was attended by the Parkview CPF chairperson, Geraldine Connell, 4th Avenue traders, Cortac and NYPD security as well as Parkview Police Station members.

The guards’ QR cards were attached to the back of their IDs and Clayton Hayward from uKheshe Pay It Forward App explained how the cards would work. “uKheshe makes it easy to pay or tip anyone even without a bank account, no matter who you bank with.

There is no cash required, you simply instal the app and top-up with your debit or credit card or EFT. You can then quickly pay or tip someone by scanning their QR card or by sending money to their virtual card or phone number,” explained Hayward.

He said the QR cards would be activated only after the guards were registered and issued with IDs which must always be hung around their necks for easy and secure identification by car-users and residents. Hayward added that the app would reduce situations whereby people say they don’t have the cash to pay the car guards when they drive off and instead enable the guards to earn some money. The guards can then withdraw their money from any Pick and Pay or save it for later.

Richard Foxcroft from T-shirt Terrorist shared some of the apron designs which are under way for the ‘4th support our Men in Blue car guard campaign’. These aprons for the guards will be issued in the second phase.

Parkview police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the initiative was really necessary because the guards would be recognised and taken seriously while they also assisted the police with keeping an eye on any suspicious activities and letting them know.
