President Ramaphosa honours Soweto Gospel Choir

JOBURG – President Ramaphosa and Nathi Mthethwa congratulate Soweto Gospel Choir following Grammy win.

Last month, February, the Soweto Gospel Choir won the Best World Music Album Grammy for their album Freedom at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.

Following the choir’s victory at the Grammy Awards, President Cyril Ramaphosa received the multi-award-winning group at the Market Theatre Square in Johannesburg this morning, 14 March.

“It’s a real pleasure and a real joy to be standing here before the real heroes of our nation – people who have gone out into the world and showcased what South Africa is all about and came back having just scooped their third Grammy Award. I congratulate you and thank you for being as successful as you are,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa said the choir was one of South Africa’s finest exports and the country looked forward to seeing many more achievements from the choir.

“We thought it was important that we hold this event so that we can see you, honour you and celebrate you,” he said.

The President was accompanied by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa who also congratulate the choir on their achievement.

“The achievements of The Soweto Gospel Choir demonstrates what happens when our people, from all walks of life and professions heed the #ThumaMina call & use their gift to be outstanding citizens & ambassadors of this country,” said Mthethwa.
