Pridwin introduces Steam subject to equip boys for future careers

MELROSE – Learners will be empowered through this multi-disciplinary subject.

Pridwin is one of the first preparatory schools in South Africa to introduce Steam (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) as a subject in their academic curriculum for boys between Grade 4 and Grade 7.

Steam brings together an integrated, cross-disciplinary approach to learning that brings the creativity of art into the logic of maths, science, and technology. The Steam curriculum incorporates elements of design thinking using a project-based learning approach to lesson delivery. Learners are empowered to master the skills they need through a process of inquiry, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving.

This helps develop their social skills, communication, collaboration, and perseverance while also cultivating technological literacy and scientific competence. Steam consists of modules such as coding, robotics and engineering.

Steam provides an opportunity for learners to extend on, apply and integrate learning from other subjects through cross-disciplinary project-based learning modules.

Pridwin’s state-of-the-art lab contains fully-equipped MakerSpace with a 3D printer, Spheros, LegoMindstorms, micro bits, Raspberry Pis, a dedicated bank of iPads and touch-screen laptops with styluses to enhance digital creativity.

Pridwin teacher Yasmin Motani said, “Steam gives the boys an opportunity to use technology in a very creative way. Our Steam programme is designed to develop boys’ technological literacy, creativity, critical thinking and social skills that they will need for their futures, regardless of the careers they choose to go into.”
