The Parktown High School for Girls participated in the Old Mutual swim-a-thon as well as the Old Mutual Water Polo Prestige Cup which took place at Roedean School (SA) in February.
According to director of sport at the school, Catherine van Eyk, seven of the beginner swimmers who had been attending beginner swimming and intermediate swimming with ‘Mrs Eckhardt and Mrs Davidson’ took part in the swim-a-thon. “Congratulations must go to all our beginner swimmers who have been very brave to learn a daunting life skill and who have all done so well.”
She added that they worked very hard and were able to showcase how much their swimming skills progressed in the swim-a-thon.
Through the Old Mutual Water Polo Prestige Cup together with their Learn-to-swim programme, Old Mutual sponsored each school with R10 000 to use towards a learn-to-swim programme.
Van Eyk said, “We are very excited to be able to use this to improve our beginner swimming and ensure that more girls learn this important life skill.”
The girls were spoilt with goodie bags and lunch which was well deserved.
Meanwhile, the first team played their final match in the Old Mutual Water Polo Prestige Cup tournament which is played over three Saturdays from September 2018 to February 2019. “This is a tough tournament against the top schools in Johannesburg. Our girls have done very well, learnt a lot and placed ninth after winning their final match against St Dunstan’s College 11 – 6,” concluded Van Eyk.
