Four cover up of birth cases investigated at Yeoville Police Station

YEOVILLE – Four cover-up birth cases are being investigated at Yeoville SAPS.

The Yeoville police are concerned by illegal abortions, or illegal terminations of birth, around Yeoville which are said to be on the rise.

This follows after four foetuses were found by the police which led to four cases being opened at the police station. One suspect has been arrested in connection with one of the cases.

According to spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station Captain Sifiso Mabizela, two foetuses were discovered on 22 January and two cases were opened. One was found in Stuart and Jolly streets, wrapped in a plastic bag and thrown in the stream. “The other foetus was [found] on the corner of Hendon Street and Fortesque Road which was pointed out by a community member who saw the foetus that was lying on the ground. The gender of the foetus was not clear. The caretaker explained that he was busy unblocking the drain when he was surprised by the foetus that came out and fell on the ground.”

Mabizela explained that one of the other foetuses were found on Kenmere Road and Frances Street on 3 February, wrapped with black stockings, in the passage of a flat. “The caretaker observed that it was a baby with a head, two hands and two legs – a complete human being – and an umbilical cord that was cut with a sharp object was still on the baby. The suspect in this matter was arrested and is currently in custody.”

Mabizela stated that the most recent incident occurred on Grafton Street on 8 February where a foetus was found on the street covered with a blanket. “While Yeoville SAPS does not encourage abortion, we urge the public to do it within the prescripts of the law and information available in local clinics and services available irrespective of nationality for free.

“If it happens that the pregnant person wishes to give up the child for whatever reason, she can visit our victim empowerment centre and social crime prevention offices for help. Furthermore, there are places where they receive the children without any paperwork or questions asked like ‘Door for Hope’, which is situated on Dorris Street, where you ring a bell and simply drop off the child.”

The spokesperson continued that there was also a shelter on Regent Street called Frida Hartley Shelter which has crèche facilities, and another in Jeppe Beinview called Woman and Children. “Let’s save lives not only is it a criminal offence to do these abortions but they could pose ill health or death.”
