Constable goes beyond the call of duty for the Parkview community

PARKVIEW – Meet the constable who is eager to serve the community at the Parkview client service centre.

Constable Roxette Buthelezi from Client Service Centre (CSC) at Parkview Police Station goes beyond the call of duty to protect members of the community.

Her motivation to protect local communities began in 2006 when she worked as a reservist for the Randfontein SAPS.

“I used to visit schools and clinics to educate people regarding the dangers of crime… Children need to learn from a young age that crime doesn’t pay. If we don’t teach them, how will they know?” said Buthelezi.

She began work with the Parkview police in 2009, doing patrols and attending to complaints out in the community. Since 2012, she has worked at the CSC dealing with complaints, assisting community members to open cases, counselling victims of crime, doing administrative tasks and signing affidavits.

“It’s a nice challenge to work at the CSC because you learn a lot from people. Attending to people’s problems makes you strong. CSC is at the heart of the station because everything starts there,” she explained.

“I always look presentable and have a heart to help people and not judge them. I am able to put myself in the shoes of other people and guide them.”

Buthelezi was awarded the prize for Vispol Member of the Year in the Joburg East Cluster last year for her selfless acts of service.

Last year, an 18-year-old complainant was delighted with the support she received from Buthelezi who went beyond the call of duty to assist her. The complainant had travelled from Durban to the area and was under the impression that she would do acting and modelling in the area. However, when she discovered she had been conned by a fraudster, she ran to the Parkview station for help. Buthelezi kindly paid for her bus ticket back to Durban. The complainant’s parents and management at the station were impressed by her actions which took place on a day when she was alone at the CSC.

Spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “She managed to handle the situation well and made no complaints thereafter. She serves the community with all her heart and makes sure that each community member is well assisted, without judgment.”

Buthelezi said, “Every day when I come to work, I put myself behind and put the community first. I will not betray this uniform and thank God every day that I can work at this award-winning station.”
