Student pilots worldwide challenged to break records in world’s largest paper plane competition

JOBURG – Applications now open for Red Bull Paper Wings 2019.

Applications are now open for the fifth edition of Red Bull Paper Wings, the world’s largest paper plane competition. Some of the world’s best student pilots will take on their rivals in hundreds of national qualifiers for the chance of winning a spot in the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final next May.

This year, tens of thousands of self-trained, student pilots, will put their outstanding creative skills to the test to enter the world’s leading paper plane contest. Applicants can find a local qualifier near them by going to www.redbullpaperwings.com, downloading the Red Bull Paper Wings App or entering an aerobatics challenge via the Red Bull Instagram channel.

Applications are open to qualifying students until 12 April. Once regional finalists are selected, the successful student pilots from around the world will descend on Salzburg’s Hangar-7 for the world final. Each pilot will be armed with a single A4 sheet of paper, ready to impress fans and judges across three distinct categories: distance, airtime, and aerobatics.

New this year, the Aerobatic Category will be fully taken online, as students will be invited to submit a short video via Instagram. Through the Red Bull Paper Wings App, students will have the opportunity to learn how to fold different types of paper planes through augmented reality (AR) and help them with the means to measure their distance and time while they practise. The Red Bull Paper Wings App will also include events geo-localization, sign-up opportunities, games and much more.

Global winners for distance, airtime, aerobatics and best-ranked player of the AR game will get a Red Bull Air Race Weekend Experience consisting of flight tickets, accommodation, full pass to watch the training and race over the weekend, access to club/sky lounge depending on the race, tour and meet and greet with one of the pilots to winner selected Red Bull Air Race.
