What to do this weekend

JOBURG – Top five things to do in Joburg this weekend.

The month of love is over and done with! Looking back, the past month seemed so long, ironic for the shortest month of the year, right? It’s time to kick off March with a bang as we kick back, relax and have fun at these events in the City.

Check out our top five things to do this weekend:

1 March: RapidLion – The South African International Film Festival

RapidLion – The South African International Film Festival recognises the achievements and excellence of filmmakers who are born in Africa, are members of the African diaspora rapidly on and are citizens of BRICS countries. The 2019 festival will take place from 1–10 March at the Market Theatre, in Johannesburg.

2 March: The Underground Bookseller Tour

Join Griffin Shea of Bridge Books City Central for a guided walk through the inner-city’s literary history, tracing Joburg’s informal book trade and its rich reading culture. The walk starts with coffee at the independent bookshop Bridge Books, before meandering through Joburg’s historic financial district stopping at heritage buildings such as the Meischke’s Building (which housed Joburg’s first bookshop and is now home to a thriving Nigerian chapbooks store), the beautiful Italianate Johannesburg City Library, colourful bookstores dedicated to African political memoirs and inner-city book markets that specialise in Southern African literature.

2 March: A Black Aesthetic: A View of South African Artists (1970–1990)

Ending on 18 April at the Standard Bank Gallery is A Black Aesthetic: A View of South African Artists (1970 -1990), the exhibition draws mostly from the University of Fort Hare art collection. Presented for the first time outside of the Eastern Cape since 1992, the collection features one of the country’s largest holdings of Black South African artists such as Feni Sekhoto, Pemba Mancoba and Mohl Saoli among others working between the period of 1970 and 1990.
