Parktown Boys head boy Dean Fin bravely encouraged boys at King Edward VII School (KES) to enter the Hollard DareDevil Run and conduct testicular exams on themselves in an effort to raise awareness about cancers affecting men.
This is Fin’s second year as Hollard’s ambassador. He challenged schools including KES, St John’s College, Jeppe and Parktown Boys to participate in the event that sees men running 5km in Speedos to raise awareness about cancer.
“Many boys think that cancer only affects older men, but testicular cancer affects men between the ages of 15 and 49, which includes high school boys,” said Fin.
Fin emphasised the importance of self-examination while also driving the good-natured rivalry between boys schools who want to win the coveted trophy.
The DareDevil Schools Challenge measures success based on the number of entries submitted by school learners. KES took home the trophy last year and hopes to take it home again after the fun run on 15 March.
Fin said he hoped that this challenge would help run cancer out of town as more men get screened. He hopes that more than 1 200 boys will take on the challenge at Zoo Lake this year.
Group sponsorship manager for Hollard Nikki Belford said, “Our biggest goal is to spread awareness about cancer to boys and men. I am amazed by Dean’s passion and bravery, which is what this run is all about.”
