WATCH: Trevor Noah tells ‘inspirational’ story about growing up in Wakanda

JOBURG – Trevor Noah gets the crowd going with some ‘inspirational’ Xhosa.

The 91st Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sunday night. With no official host in sight, it seemed like it would’ve taken a lot for the show to flow seamlessly but everything went as normal as previous editions of the Oscars – except for the fact that Trevor Noah completely trolled the whole audience as well as the whole world during his presentation for Black Panther as one of the Best Picture nominees for the night.

The film is set in fictional Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation in the Marvel universe. It follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the king of Wakanda (played by veteran South African actor, Dr John Kani), returns to Wakanda to defend the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s courage as king – and Black Panther – is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.  The film also features appearances by local actors Atandwa Kani and Connie Chiume.

The comedian joked about growing up in Wakanda and people around the world greeting him with the famous ‘Wakanda Forever’ tagline from the blockbuster. It is safe to say that, for some time, people thought Wakanda was a real and hidden gem in Africa – a perfect comic recipe for Noah during his presentation. What stood out during Noah’s presentation was when he spoke some ‘inspirational’ isiXhosa that made the audience erupt in applause.

Abelungu abazi uba ndiyaxoka’– which means, ‘In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart,” Noah said.

Unbeknownst to the audience, at the Dolby Theatre and around the world, Noah literally said ‘white people don’t know I’m lying’ and pulled off the biggest inside joke on live TV.
