Johannesburg north-east high schools to get permanent principals soon

JOHANNESBURG – The SGBs have been granted power to appoint own headmasters.

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed a process to appoint permanent principals to fill three crucial posts in the Johannesburg north-eastern schools, is well underway.

The three public institutions, Northview, Sandringham and Highlands North Boys high schools, will soon announce their elected headmasters.

The position at Northview High School became vacant after the former headmaster, Chris Mathebula, was killed in a crossfire during a heist last year outside Joburg.

Also last year, Phillip du Plessis, the principal of Sandringham was badly injured in a car accident outside a casino and he was hospitalised – he has since been discharged and is said to be on sick leave.

Highlands North Boys have Lawrence Nayager as their acting principal after their former headmaster quit and joined a private teaching institution and relocated to a Pretoria-based school.

The school governing bodies (SGBs) have appointed acting principals, including Cecilia Papo at Northview High School. Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, Steven Mabona, said the situation is being managed.

He said the position of a headmaster at Northview High School was advertised last November. “The selection process is underway, having been trained on the process and after the interview, the SGB will make a recommendation to the HOD [head of department] and if all is finalised. Assumption of duty will be on 1 April 2019.”

“The post is advertised and everyone is legible to apply including the acting principal – the best candidate for the post will be appointed.”

As for principal Du Plessis, Mabona said he is currently on sick leave and the department is expecting him back on 31 March.

Regarding Nayager, Mabona said, “He will continue acting until the post is filled by the appointed candidate after the recruitment process. Possible assumption of duty is expected to also be on 1 April.”
