People create and consume art every day and the Department of Arts and Culture aims to support this industry.

To this end, the department in partnership with the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) as well as the Creative Industry Task Team (CITT) briefed the media on the state of readiness for the upcoming CCIFSA National Elective Conference. The briefing took place at the National Film and Video Foundation, in Houghton.

The federation was formed in 2015 as a unifying body to champion the interests of the cultural and creative sector. According to the chief of staff in the minister of the department’s office, Sibongile Besani, the conference will serve as the election of the new leadership of the federation.

Besani said key decisions had been taken during lengthy preparation discussions between the department, federation and CITT. “The national conference will be held on 28 to 29 March 2019. Secondly, the national conference must be preceded by both the district general meetings and provincial summits respectively,” added Besani.

He said these meetings and summits should be held in all provinces and should be open to all artists with the focus being to deal with the Memorandum of Incorporation or what could be termed the ‘constitution’ of the industry and the election of delegates to the provincial summit. He also added that there would be nine sectors to elect delegates from.

Besani concluded that an aggressive campaign was being run to put the information out on all public platforms.
