Torah Academy Nursery School launches recycling project in memory of Hugo

ORCHARDS – The recyclers are the ones who are bound to benefit from this project and the more they get, the higher their warning potential.

Torah Academy Nursery School began the year by relaunching their Recycling for Hugo project.

According to Torah’s Morah Chana Rivka Lewin, the project arose from a young boy, Hugo, who was compassionate towards the recyclers in the Glenhazel area. He wanted to enrich their quality of life by enabling them to earn money from recycled items to support their families.

Lewin said Hugo sadly passed away in an unfortunate way but his mother and grandmother Nicole Paluch and Sharon continued his legacy.

She said the project has given young children at Torah Academy Nursery School in Orchards, off Louis Botha Avenue, an insight into the life of a recycler and to learn about their human side. “The project has made children sensitive to the plight of others, to learn the value of recycling and protecting our planet to make the world a better place and the value of giving.

“We’ve always been a recycle conscious place, and always looking for ways to connect with and help the community, especially those less fortunate – thus the project. The recyclers are the ones who are bound to benefit from this project and the more they get, the higher their earning potential.”

Lewin said local caterers in the area can drop off plastic bottles near the school on Tuesdays after their weekend functions.

Other schools have been approached and more schools are joining and she said every school can model this act of giving.

The project was launched last September and it ran privately as a community-school enterprise, she added.

People can drop off plastic bottles, metal and old computers at the school premises or a bin can also be put outside or other schools and caterers in the area can get their own bins at a cost of R250.
