Bramley residents want stricter laws imposed to curb public drinking

BRAMLEY – Those found drinking in public will be arrested and fined.

Residents of Bramley are calling on the police and their councillor to take action against those in the area who behave badly in public.

Residents claim that there are people who urinate in front of children and women passing by on the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Ruma Road while also getting drunk.

Resident Lance Talbolt said they had approached Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer and their local police station, seeking help to curb this situation. He claimed that nothing had been done to address their concerns.

“This is a huge problem because there are school-going children who walk past that area daily and they are exposed to a disgusting thing,” he said.

“We have tried everything and even reported this to the police as well as our councillor but we were told nothing can be done – this is unacceptable.

“Our police drive past and some even stop to buy at the shop on the corner and the drinkers don’t care about the police, they don’t hide their drinks but just drink in front of the police who turn a blind eye.”

Rugheimer said, “That is not my area and I haven’t received such a complaint.”

Molefe Mogodi, the spokesperson for the Bramley police, said they did arrest people who conducted themselves in such a manner and even issued them fines.

He said people who were seen, especially in that particular spot, drinking and urinating in public, were arrested and fined but not detained.

“Our officers do patrol that area and even check if the liquor store is compliant according to the Liquor Act, and they do,” he said.

“We were not aware though that this has spiralled out of control but we will ensure that the law is enforced and such ill disciplines are stopped.”

He urged the community to notify the police when such incidents were seen so that action could be taken.
