Maryvale College set to host annual market day in Orchards

ORCHARDS – The event is earmarked to raise funds to donate to a charity and also to build a bridge across Louis Botha Avenue.

Valentine’s Day will take on a special flavour at Maryvale Primary College in Orchards this year with their annual market day to be held on 15 February.

This according to Maryvale College’s pre- and primary school’s principal, Kirsten Smith, who added that each grade will run a stall to raise funds for charity and the school.

Smith said this event is used as part of the school’s ongoing fundraising initiative to support their institution based in the Johannesburg north-east suburbs.

She said the community, teachers and learners will come together to sell an array of goodies, from delectable homemade brownies, cookies, cakes and flapjacks to toys and there will even be a nail salon.

Games and raffles are also on offer with prizes including chocolate hampers and teddy bears, she said.

“The proceeds are halved and the money is used to buy toiletry hampers for the elderly at the Alexandra Old Age Home with the balance allocated to the fundraising account,” said Smith,

“The fundraising project is to enable the school to build a bridge over Louis Botha Avenue to connect the high school and the primary school campuses. This project is to ensure the safety of the pupils with the ongoing development of Rea Vaya.”

Primary school’s learners cross the busy street on a daily basis to use the facilities at the high school she explained.

The market day is a day of fun and builds school spirit. The children buy from each other’s stalls and can spoil their family members with little treats.

The grade that raises the most money will be announced at assembly and a small token of appreciation or treat will be given to them to enjoy.

Even though Valentine’s Day is on 14 February, the college will also use their market day on 15 February to commemorate this annual occasion.
