The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has slammed former Johannesburg mayor,  Parks Tau, for defaming the current mayor, Herman Mashaba.

This after Tau alleged that Mashaba was sexist and anti-black. The High Court found these remarks defamatory and has interdicted him from repeating them.

Judge Willem van der Linde of the Gauteng High Court held that the comments made by Tau stretched the boundaries of legitimate political criticism into character assassination.

The court ordered Tau to pay costs for the application, including the costs of counsel. Mashaba promised to donate the costs to an organisation that supported women.

“I have decided to donate the proceeds of the costs to an organisation supporting women in need as a result of abuse and other social ills. I will be requesting the Department of Social Development in the City of Johannesburg to assist me to identify a suitable cause,” said Mashaba in a statement.

He added that the defamatory remarks made against him discredited his good work and reputation.
