Well done to the City of Johannesburg, a letter from a Sydenham resident

SYDENHAM – City Power team did their level best to bring power back to a resident's home.


Resident of Sydenham, Helen Handel writes:

We are always seeing and hearing negative reports regarding the City of Johannesburg and I would like to share with you the amazing service I received.

On 23 January, after the power outage experienced in Sydenham, I was the only property to which power was not restored, I then called City Power call centre and a fault was logged.

After waiting two hours, I went to our local City Power depot and explained the situation. Whilst I was still there, a contractor was despatched and minutes after I returned home, the contractor was on site.

He discovered the part of the underground cable had burnt out and did a temporary repair and fortunately my power was restored within 30 minutes.

I was assured by the contractor that connectors were to be installed, as he did not have with him and unfortunately on Thursday during the heavy thunderstorm, my property was struck by lightning. Assuming this temporary repair was responsible, I logged a call on the website and had three contractors visit the site.

I was nervous about the situation, I emailed City Power’s general manager, local depot and the mayor’s office on Monday morning, 28 January.

With four minutes, I had a response from the Mayor’s office, as well as emails from City Power. Within an hour of the email, the contractor, Nico had sent someone to access the situation and three hours later, two teams were at my property installing new cables with connectors.

As they were about to finish, they discovered that my neighbour’s cable was also a temporary fix (probably from years ago) and advised that they would come on Tuesday to repair that cable as well.

Nico phoned me on Tuesday to advise that the contractors would be on site in the afternoon, and I am pleased to advise that they came and repaired my neighbour’s cable as well.

My sincere thanks to Nico, who went above and beyond, both on Wednesday and the following Monday to ensure that my electricity was safe.
